Three reasons to visit Curvaceous Lingerie in Old Town

In a 2008 study, it was reported that 80% of women wear the wrong bra size, which seems crazy and yet not surprising at the same time. There have been plenty of times that I’ve gone into a Target dressing room with a handful of bras in different sizes and bought whichever one appears to work the best. Women’s bodies are constantly changing, but so often, we stick with that old faithful bra.

Yet when it comes to something I wear every single day, it seems that I should invest some time and money into making sure I’m wearing something that is the correct size and doing its job.

I came to my senses after having Margot last year. Around the same time that I realized I was annoyed with the ratty nursing bras I kept after having Stella, Curvaceous Lingerie in Old Town posted a photo of the prettiest nursing bras I had ever seen:

It’s hard enough to be a new mom and feeling worse for wear. You might as well be wearing something pretty to make the whole process of being a human milk truck slightly more tolerable. Just days after seeing that photo posted, I zipped over to Old Town to get fitted and buy nursing bras.

Just over a year later, now that my days of being a milk truck are gradually coming to an end, I decided it was time to revisit Curvaceous for a bra revamp. Because guess what: the Target ones I bought a couple of years ago were just not cutting it anymore. The fabric gapped, and the band rode up high on my back. I realized it’s perfectly acceptable to throw or give away what isn’t working in your wardrobe and start fresh.

So this past week I went back to Curvaceous and found some beautiful new staples, and best of all, THEY FIT. I think all of the ladies in mid-Michigan should do themselves a favor and take care of the ta-tas. Self care, gals!

  1. Curvaceous Lingerie is locally owned. Owner Lauren Long opened Curvaceous in 2012 after being disappointed in the selections available in the Lansing area.  Originally located in The Wedding Bell, Lauren’s business did so well that she opened its own location in Old Town in 2014. Old Town is a treasure trove of locally owned businesses, especially stores owned by women! I love when I can buy local and help support shop owners in the area, especially because the attention to the customers and the experience is much more personal. Which brings me to my next point…
  2. The staff is wonderful at what they do. I’ve known Lauren for the last several years; she is the one who fitted me for my nursing bras last year. This most recent visit, I had the help of Jenea. Once I was measured, she brought me several styles to try and helped me into the first one to make sure the fit was correct. As I tried different ones on, another customer was trying on bras in the next room. She was with her adult daughter, and I overheard her say that she had recently lost 70 pounds. She was still wearing the same bra from before. Her daughter was also wanting to get measured and try on bras. Jenea to the rescue! I heard Jenea explain the importance of wearing the correct band size, how to properly put on a bra, and where each part of it should sit on the body. Despite helping out multiple customers at once, Jenea was super attentive and helpful with all of us. It’s the kind of service you don’t typically find in chain stores.
  3. The store is size inclusive. It can be very intimidating to go bra and lingerie shopping, and disheartening when you can’t find something that fits properly. It is the mission of Curvaceous to help make every woman feel good about herself, and the store offers items from size small to 3X/4X, 28-46 band sizes, and A-KK cup sizes. Instead of seeing large photos of Victoria’s Secret Angels on the walls, there are photos of local women of all shapes and sizes looking beautiful in Curvaceous Lingerie pieces. The photos are taken by the wonderful photographer and my friend Mary Turner. If you visit the store, you might see my familiar face, from when I did a photo campaign with Mary and Lauren a few years ago. As a plus-sized woman, I love being able to visit a store and find beautiful things that fit and make me feel good. I’ve never felt judged or uncomfortable at Curvaceous.
