People say that fashions always come back around, and that is absolutely true. Look at any women’s clothing department lately, and it’s like a Delia’s catalog exploded onto the shelves. If you didn’t already know by the series reboots and reunion concert tours, the 90s are back, babe.
Recently, I’ve been wearing my vintage, acid-washed cropped Levis jacket to barre class and getting a lot of compliments. I still remember the day I bought it at one of my favorite vintage stores, Lost and Found Vintage in Royal Oak. It was about eight or nine years ago, and I was shopping with my husband and cousin when I spotted it and fell in love.
Zack likes to joke whenever I wear it that he told me I should buy it, when in reality both he and my cousin were iffy on the purchase. I called it my Kelly Kapowski jean jacket. And this past weekend, I saw brand new Levi’s jean jackets in a variety of light washes at Nordstrom. Everything comes back around.
I’ve been a vintage clothing fan for the last decade or so, and have amassed a small collection of vintage dresses over the years. I love the thrill of finding a treasure of a dress buried in a clothing rack, waiting for a new lease on life. I am also especially excited when I find things that fit well. There’s something very special about wearing an outfit that can’t be found just anywhere.
I have a few go-tos when it comes to finding vintage treasures, so I wanted to highlight some of my favorite vintage shops.
As I mentioned, Lost and Found Vintage is one of my most favorite places. I can’t even count how many wonderful pieces I’ve found here, from my rehearsal dinner outfit to countless summer dresses. I’ve shopped here with friends and family and always get butterflies in my stomach when I walk in the doors.
I think that their prices are extremely reasonable. I’ve rarely spent more than $50 on a dress, with many of the ones I’ve bought costing closer to $28. Think about it: you can barely get something nice from most stores at those prices, and buying something vintage means you’re pretty much guaranteed to be the only person you know with that item.
I will also say that the quality of my vintage dresses is infinitely better than the things I buy season to season from Old Navy or other chain stores.
Here are some of my all-time favorites I’ve found at Lost and Found:
One of my next favorites is Dear Golden in Ann Arbor. I discovered the store through Instagram and their Etsy shop. The shop’s owner Lauren has incredible taste and style on her own, and her shop is a fanciful paradise. Seriously, I wish the shop existed when I was getting married or that I could renew my vows, because her selection of vintage wedding dresses is a dream.
Dear Golden is beautifully curated store with only items of the utmost quality. The pieces cost more than what I’ve bought at Lost and Found, so I often have to admire the beautiful clothes from afar on Instagram. Still, there are some things that have proven to be irresistible, and I’m so happy I have them.
The rainbow coat above was one of the items that I fell in love with the moment I saw it on Instagram. Lauren will often post teaser images of the pieces and then make them available on the Etsy shop later on. I refreshed the page so many times that day so that I could snag it. The white dress I’m wearing with it is from Lost and Found. I’m pregnant with Margot here. 🙂
I’ve also had the chance to visit the Dear Golden store once or twice in Ann Arbor, and it’s definitely worth the drive to be able to try items on in person or admire the beautiful displays. The jewelry is out of this world.
Finally, I’m a big fan of SIB (Simplicity Is Bliss) Vintage on Instagram/Etsy. I somehow stumbled on her shop on Instagram through following Dear Golden, and have loved following her account. She offers beautiful dresses at a range of prices, and I always appreciate how often she has dresses in larger sizes.
She also does an amazing Spring Cleaning sale, which is coming up in just a few days. Dresses are marked way down to help her clear her inventory.
With ordering through Etsy, there is definitely the gamble of items not fitting properly. Both Dear Golden and SIB Vintage post several photos of each item and give very clear measurements, so that helps tremendously.
Even in a Kon Mari method whirlwind, these dresses and their vintage friends in my closet are going to stay put. It’s hard to tell if our girls will ever care about wearing vintage clothes one day, or even wear the same size as I do, but I hope they’ll appreciate the treasure trove as much as I do.
Thanks for including me! ❤️
