This weekend was a big milestone in our family: Margot’s first haircut! I think I had been holding off on getting her hair cut because it still felt so early, especially in comparison to her big sister. Stella barely had any hair for a long time, and her first haircut was after she turned two.
Margot on the other hand has always a lot of hair, so she has rocked the Pebbles ponytail on top of her head for many months. But it was getting very unruly, so it was time to bite the bullet and get it cut. Little ones end up looking so grown up with their hair cut, so I have no doubt I was trying to hold onto as much of the baby phase as possible.
Stella’s first haircut was with my stylist Nathan at Red the Salon in Birmingham. She was old enough to sit still pretty well. Now she gets her hair cut at Mirabella in Okemos, and her stylist Courtney does a wonderful job with her hair. I considered taking Margot there, but with her still being so little, I felt like going somewhere more catered to little ones would be the way to go.
Thanks to my local mom friends, I learned about Lockworx in Lansing. Lockworx features a small salon inside called Little Locks Salon, which is only open on Saturdays I learned. Luckily when I called on Friday, I was able to make an appointment for Saturday morning.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when we arrived, but we were greeted by the very friendly and sweet Mary Jo. I learned later that she is the aunt of a friend, which further shows how much the Lansing area is such a small world. Mary Jo took us back into the Little Locks room, which was a complete kiddie paradise separate from the rest of the salon. There was a TV playing cartoons, toys lining the wall, stacks of sticker books, a popcorn machine, and plenty of suckers.
Margot was a little nervous at first, but Mary Jo was very patient and kind. After getting a sucker, she definitely warmed up to the process. I mean, who wouldn’t?
Mary Jo did a wonderful job working around Margot’s fidgeting in her seat, and gave Margot a beautiful little bob with short bangs that won’t be getting into her eyes anymore. While chatting with her, I learned that she used to work in a daycare and has been cutting hair for over two decades.
After the haircut, Mary Jo opened up a drawer that had a treasure trove of hair bows, hair ties, bobby pins, the works. Margot picked out a red bow and Mary Jo gave her the cutest little hairstyle.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about Mary Jo at Little Locks. Even though the salon is quite a drive from our house, it was completely worth the extra time in the car to have such a pleasant first haircut experience. I truly imagined having to hold Margot still or sit with her in the chair and that we would leave with an uneven ‘do.
But instead, we left with a happy girl and a cute American Girl doll haircut:
Margot’s haircut cost $16. Considering we went through two suckers and some Cheez-Its, I thought that was more than reasonable. I’m looking forward to many fun haircuts for Margot at Little Locks in the future.
