When it came to being home with two little girls this summer, I learned how ever-important it was to have at least a couple outings planned per week. That is, beyond adventures to the grocery store that either went very smoothly (a patient baby Margot) or not so much (a Supermarket Sweep-level of maneuvering with the cart in the middle of Kroger for a Stella potty break).
Last Friday was our first visit to the Sigh Studio of Music in Old Town, which was holding a free demo class for children. I first met Melissa Sigh a few years ago, when she was holding music classes at a location off of Saginaw in Lansing and at Mother & Earth Baby Boutique in Old Town. Stella enjoyed the classes very much when she was smaller, so the free demo seemed like a great opportunity to see how Margot might do.
Melissa’s new studio off of Washington Ave. is beautiful! It is the main level of their home, and has a lot of great space for her classes. Along with early childhood music, Sigh Studio also offers ukulele, guitar, piano, and voice lessons, among other offerings in either a group or private setting. My friend Stephanie brought her two daughters to the class on Friday, and there ended up being more than a dozen children at the demo.
Melissa has a very sweet disposition and lovely singing voice. The songs and movements are easy to follow, and she often incorporates fun props for the kids, such as scarves, bells, and bubbles.
One of the things I have loved about her classes is that there is no pressure to get the kids to participate, pay attention, keep quiet, or even sit still. The early childhood music classes are very go-with-the-flow and encourage as much participation as the children are willing to give.
Stella and her friends Sophia and Viviana had a lot of fun, and Margot was completely enamored the whole class. She kicked her feet to the music and didn’t fuss for a moment, which was pretty darn good considering the class time was right during her usual morning nap.
Sigh Studio is beginning early fall classes this week, and after seeing how much both Stella and Margot enjoyed the class together, I have signed them up for one of the classes offered for ages 0-5. I’m looking forward to having a consistent activity planned for both of the girls this fall.
